The short version

Folio is a desktop application that runs on your computer. It reads the folders and drives you choose and keeps its catalog on your own PC. Your photographs, their filenames and your catalog are never uploaded, not scanned in a cloud, and not used to train anything. There is no Folio account and no telemetry.

Folio does connect to the internet for two things only: activating and checking your license, and checking for updates. Both are described below, with exactly what they send.

This policy covers the application, this website, and the checkout, because they behave differently. It is written by the independent developer who makes Folio (“the Folio developer”, “we”, “us”), who is responsible for the personal data described here.

The application

What stays on your PC. Folio writes its catalog to its application data folder on your computer: filenames, folder paths, capture dates, file sizes, content fingerprints, and the plans you reviewed. It also keeps its settings, a license record, and session logs for diagnosing errors (in %TEMP%\Folio). None of this is sent anywhere. You can delete the catalog at any time from Settings; your photographs are untouched, because the catalog describes your files and is not a copy of them.

The license record holds your license key and activation details, and is protected with Windows data protection for your user account.

License activation and checks. When you activate Folio, it sends your license key and an instance name (“Folio Windows” followed by eight random characters, not your computer’s name) to the License API of Lemon Squeezy, our merchant of record. About once a week, when you are online, Folio sends your license key and the activation’s ID to confirm the license is still valid. Lemon Squeezy, like any server, also receives your IP address with the request.

Update checks. About once a day, when you are online, Folio downloads a small update manifest from GitHub, where Folio’s releases are published, and downloads a new installer from there when one is available. These requests carry no information about you or your photographs, but GitHub receives your IP address and standard request details, as with any download.

No telemetry. Folio does not collect usage statistics, crash reports, or a device identifier. Nothing is sent when you scan, review, organize, rename or clean up.

This website

Page-view counts, and no cookies. This site uses Vercel Web Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read. It sets no cookies and does not follow you from one site to another. It records the page address, the referring site, your browser, operating system and device type, and your country, and it tells repeat visits apart for a single day without storing your IP address. We use this only to see how many people read the site. It builds no profile of you.

No third-party requests when a page loads. The typefaces and the analytics script are served by this site itself, so opening a page contacts no one else.

The feedback form, only when you send it. If you use the feedback form, what you wrote is sent to Web3Forms, the service that delivers it to us by email: the kind of message you picked, the message itself, and your email address if you chose to give one. Nothing is sent until you press Send. We use it to read your message and, if you left an address, to reply. Web3Forms’ own privacy policy covers how it handles the message on the way.

Server logs. The service that hosts this site may keep standard access logs, which usually include IP addresses, for security and reliability.

The checkout

Payment is handled by Lemon Squeezy, LLC as merchant of record. It collects what a payment requires: your name, email address, billing country and payment details, under its own privacy policy, which is linked from the checkout. We never see your card details.

From a completed order we receive your name, email address, country, what you bought and your license key. We use them to deliver your license, to answer you when you write, and to keep the records tax law requires. We do not sell them, and we do not add you to a mailing list.

Why we may use your data

  • To deliver and support the license you bought, which is needed to perform our agreement with you.
  • To keep licensing working and prevent misuse of license keys, which is our legitimate interest.
  • To reply to feedback you chose to send, with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
  • To keep sales records, where the law requires it.

Where your data goes

Lemon Squeezy, Web3Forms, GitHub and our email provider may process data in the United States and other countries. We use them because they are needed to sell, deliver and support Folio, and we share only what each needs for that purpose.

How long it is kept

Order and license records are kept for as long as your license exists and tax law requires. Feedback and emails are kept for as long as they are useful to answer you, and deleted on request. The data on your own PC is kept until you delete it.

Your rights

You can ask what personal data we hold about you, ask for a copy, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how it is used, or withdraw a consent you gave. Write to folioarchive@gmail.com and we will answer within 30 days. Deleting your record does not cancel a license you have bought, though we may then be unable to look up your key for you. Records that tax law requires are kept by the merchant of record regardless.

If you believe your data has been mishandled, you may also complain to the data protection authority where you live.

Children

Folio is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it. If a future version of Folio ever needs to send anything not described here, this policy will say so before that version ships.
